Colleges by type and by state

Every college with a page on this site, 5,711 in all, listed by the state or jurisdiction NCES files it under and then by name.

By type

A college is of a type when NCES’s completions file shows it awarded at least one degree in the type’s program at the type’s level: a law school awarded the professional doctorate in law, a medical school the Doctor of Medicine. Business schools are colleges that awarded any master’s degree in NCES’s business family of programs (CIP 52), and engineering schools any bachelor’s degree in engineering (CIP 14), so both are broad by construction. Counts are for the fifty states and DC, first majors, from July 2024 to June 2025.
