Three records, one row each
Three measures from three publishers, counted differently, over different periods. Read down a column rather than across a row: nothing here adds, divides or ranks one against another. There is no immigration column because there is no immigration page for a state — CBP publishes by sector and field office rather than by geography, and assigning one to the other would be a claim the data does not make. The violent crime rate is offenses reported to police per 100,000 residents of the population the reporting agencies covered — not the state’s population, and the coverage column is the share it was. Two states are only comparable with those shares beside them. The imprisonment rate counts people held under a state’s own correctional authority. Federal money per resident is obligated against a place of performance in the state, which is where an award is administered rather than where it reaches people; one agency running something national from one office puts that whole figure in one state.
