Trips by state
New York reported the most transit trips of any state in 2025, 3,541,505,423
Unlinked passenger trips reported to the National Transit Database for 2025, by the state of each agency’s address. A count of boardings, not a rate, and not a measure of how much of a state’s population rides.
Key: Transit trips, 2025. 5 shades, lightest to darkest: under 6m; 6m to 16m; 16m to 58m; 58m to 100m; 100m and over. gray: not reported.
A state is the address an agency reports to the National Transit Database, so an agency that runs service across a state line counts all of its trips in one state.
A trip is one boarding of one vehicle: a ride with a transfer is two trips. Trips reported with no mode are left out of each state’s total, as they are on the states ranking.
American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands are in the table and the rankings and not drawn: the map is of the 50 states and DC.
