What stands out

Five findings. From the FAA’s Releasable Aircraft Database, each one a row from a query.

  • The FAA’s registry holds 312,570 registered aircraft as of October 23, 2026, with 94,143 aircraft models and 4,752 engine models in its reference tables. 308,227 of the registered aircraft print a state in the registrant’s address. United States →

  • Texas is the registrant’s state on 29,539 of the registered aircraft, the most of the 58 states and areas the FAA prints: 9.6% of the registered aircraft that print one. It is the state of the registrant’s address, not where an aircraft is kept or flown. Texas →

  • 4,343 of the registered aircraft print no state in the registrant’s address. They are counted apart and are in no state’s count or rank. United States →

  • Individual is the FAA’s registrant type on the most aircraft: 126,386, or 40.4% of the registered aircraft. The type is the FAA’s label for who is registered, and says nothing about what an aircraft is used for. Individual →

  • The years of manufacture the FAA prints run from 1909 to 2026. The year is the field the FAA defines as “Year manufactured”; it is not an age, and the registry does not say how long an aircraft has flown. United States →

Only the codes the FAA’s layout document describes as valid (V, T and M) are counted as registered on these pages; an aircraft can be listed under another status while sold, expired, revoked or awaiting registration.

The Factbook leaves out a count under 11, and its cell reads “Left out by the Factbook”. It leaves out a count of 11 or more too where the printed counts and totals would give a count under 11 back, and a row it leaves out has no rank.

Registered aircraft by year of manufacture

Registered aircraft were built in 1909 to 2025

Registered aircraft on the FAA’s registry (status codes V, T and M) by the year of manufacture it prints for them, one N-number counted once. A count of registered aircraft, not of aircraft in the air.

A year of manufacture is the field the FAA defines as “Year manufactured”, not an age: the registry does not say how long an aircraft has flown.

A year whose count the Factbook leaves out draws no column, and the table says “Left out by the Factbook”: its count is under 11, none included, or the Factbook leaves it out so that the printed counts and totals cannot give a count under 11 back. That is not a count of zero.

68,852 registered aircraft print no year of manufacture, or print 0000. They are in the table and not drawn, and are not counted in any year.

The years after 2025 are in the table and not drawn: the registry’s snapshot is from 2026, and aircraft built that year are still being added to it.

Analysis

Each brief is written around figures the Factbook’s queries return, and every figure in it is checked against the query that produced it, so the text and the data cannot drift apart.

  • Registry as of 23 October 2026: 27.3% built in the 1960s or 1970s

Of the 312,570 aircraft on the FAA's registry as of 23 October 2026, 85,310, or 27.3%, carry a year of manufacture in the 1960s or the 1970s. The chart draws each decade from the 1930s to the 2020s as a share of every registered aircraft.
