Of the 100 largest public school districts, New York City (33 geographic districts) spent the most per pupil in fiscal year 2023, $33,387, and State-Sponsored Charter Schools the least, $7,980. 27 of them spent more than the national $16,398.

What this data cannot show

  • Current spending leaves out buildings, equipment and debt. A district paying tuition for pupils another district teaches counts that tuition as its own spending.
  • The hundred are the largest by the finance file's own membership for fiscal year 2023, the set NCES 2025-305's Table 1 lists, not by this site's newer enrollment figures.
  • fiscal year 2023 is NCES's newest district finance file, and it is provisional: NCES revises it in a later release.
