What this classification is
- The IRS assigns a code when it recognizes an organization and rarely revisits it. This describes what an organization said it would do at registration, which may not be what it does now.
- Around three in ten recognized organizations carry no code at all, concentrated among older registrations and non-charitable subsections. They are in none of these categories and are counted on the hub instead.
- The names here are the IRS’s own. Other publishers use a revised taxonomy with different names for several groups, so a figure here will not always line up with one of theirs carrying a similar label.
