How the banks figures are made

How the pages of the Banks and credit unions hub read what their publishers put out, and what that record can and cannot say. The method every topic shares — where a figure comes from, snapshots, freshness and corrections — is on the site’s methodology page.

Two agencies, never added together

Banks and savings institutions are the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s: the 4,230 active charters in its BankFind institutions file, run September 29, 2026. Credit unions are the National Credit Union Administration’s: the 4,299 that filed a Call Report for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, 4,214 of them insured by the NCUA’s fund. A bank’s office and a credit union’s site are different records kept by different agencies, so no count on these pages adds one to the other, and no page calls a credit union FDIC-insured.

An office is counted where it is

The FDIC lists 78,077 current offices of the institutions it insures, 802 of them abroad. The office counts here are the FDIC’s “Full Service” types, service codes 11 to 16: 73,678 offices. Drive-throughs, loan production offices and other limited-service sites are in the file and are not called a branch. A bank is counted in the state where it is headquartered, and its offices in the states where they are, so a state’s office count includes the offices of banks headquartered elsewhere.

Per resident, over one population

Offices and credit-union sites per 100,000 residents divide each state’s count by the Census Bureau’s estimate for July 1, 2025, the one the demographics hub publishes. The national rate sums the fifty states and DC first: 21.5 full-service bank offices and 6.7 credit-union sites per 100,000 residents. The NCUA lists 22,787 sites for the quarter, 20,636 of them offering member services.

Assets, deposits and members are the filers’

Assets and deposits are the institutions’ own Call Report figures for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, summed over the 4,218 banks that reported for it. They are not audited statements. Credit-union members are the Call Report’s count of members, so a person who belongs to two credit unions is counted twice.

What this data cannot show

  • Banks and credit unions are counted by two agencies under two definitions. An FDIC office and an NCUA site are different records, and no figure here adds one to the other.
  • An institution is counted where it is headquartered (a bank) or where its Call Report is mailed (a credit union); its offices are counted where they are, so a bank headquartered in one state has offices in others.
  • Assets and deposits are the institutions' own Call Report figures for the quarter named, as the FDIC and the NCUA publish them. They are not audited statements, and a late filer has no figure for the newest quarter.
  • Credit-union members are the Call Report's count, so a person who belongs to two credit unions is counted twice.
  • There is no rating of safety here. Neither agency publishes one, and a score built from ratios would be a judgment nobody published.
  • Routing numbers and opening hours are not in the FDIC's files, and the NCUA publishes no routing numbers either.
