American Factbook Research

By total assets at book value

Book value is what an organization paid for what it holds. A private foundation also reports fair market value — what those assets are worth now — and it is shown in its own column where the form carries it.

How to read this

  • The ranking is on book value, deliberately. A Form 990 and a Form 990-EZ report only book value, so ranking on fair market value would put foundations on a different measure from every public charity beside them. It is also the figure other publishers show, so these numbers reconcile with theirs.
  • Fair market value is usually the larger of the two, sometimes by half again, and only a Form 990-PF reports it. A blank in that column means the organization’s form does not ask, not that the value is zero.
  • Assets are not an endowment. They include buildings, equipment and receivables as well as investments, so a hospital with a campus and a foundation with a portfolio are not holding comparable things.
  • Each row is that organization’s most recent filing, and those are different years. Figures are as reported and are not audited by the IRS.
