What this data cannot show
- The fiscal year is not over. These are obligations recorded so far, and a figure here is not comparable with a full year.
- An obligation is a binding commitment to pay, not money paid. Outlays are reported separately and the two are never equal in the same year.
- Contracts only. An industry code describes the seller on a purchase, and a grant, a loan or a direct payment has no seller, so these figures do not add to the hub’s headline total and are not meant to.
- NAICS says what industry the seller is in, not what was bought. The same manufacturer sells aircraft, spare parts and engineering studies under one industry code. What was purchased is the product and service ranking.
- The code is the one recorded on the contract. A company that works across industries is counted under whichever code each contract carries.
